# K10 control – kato1997 (Kato et al., Nutr Cancer 1997;28:276-81, NYU Women's Health Study)

Sources: historisk/kato1997.txt, and a pdftotext extraction of kato1997.pdf (Drive Nedlastinger) used to fix page numbers. Page numbers are in the footers; Table 3 is on PDF p.5, which is journal p.279.
Rows checked: 20.

## Discrepancies
No numeric discrepancies. Every RR, CI and P trend in Table 3 (red meat, ham/sausages, poultry, fish/shellfish, and the red meat : poultry + fish ratio) matches the text. The reference ".00" is a lost leading "1" (the fish and potato rows print "1.00"), so coding it as 1.00 is correct.

| estimate_id | field | in database | in paper | severity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| studies.csv | in_cup2016 / cup_role | yes / hvl_only | the studies notes say the brief gave pre2010/no but the row was set from the supplement's CUP list. The row is internally contradictory; check it against cup_extraction. | minor (metadata) |
| _017–_020 | exposure | red_undefined, substitution | a ratio of red meat to poultry + fish. The coding is right; the label "Red meat/poultry + fish, shellfish" is as printed. | – |

## Missing estimates
None. The colon-only analysis (73 cases) is described only as "results generally confirmed", with no numbers. Table 3 sub-rows for fish protein/fat/calcium are nutrient components and out of scope.

## Confirmed
All 20 rows. The model is confirmed from the Table 3 fn: "total calorie intake, age, and place at enrollment and highest level of education". studies.csv is confirmed: 14,727 women aged 34–65, enrolled 1985–91, mean follow-up 7.1 years, 105,044 person-years, 100 colorectal cases, 73 colon, 70-item FFQ. No case counts, cut-points or medians per quartile are printed, so the empty fields are correct.

## Internal consistency
Consistent. The abstract's fish 0.49 (0.27–0.89) equals Table 3.

## Verdict
Fit for use, for highest vs lowest only, since no doses are available. Red meat is undefined, so includes_processed=unclear is correct.
